Likiep Coral Heads
The coral heads often rise almost vertically from depths of over 150 feet. They have been known to grow several feet per year and the last time much of the Marshall Islands was surveyed was by the Japanese after they took these islands from the Germans. Thus, even in the charted regions a new coral head could easily crop up.
Polarizing sunglasses help a lot. The water around the coral head will appear dark blue while the top will have a dull brown tone to it. The difference between a shallow (30 feet) patch of sand and a dangerous (2 feet) coral head is the green vs. brown green color.
Some of the coral heads are relatively easy to see, as this one is, others are very difficult to see, especially in choppy water, if the skies are gray, or the sun is in front of you.
